Social Change School Summer Institute | $725
July 4, 2017 to July 14, 2017
Social Change School's summer institute is a graduate-style humanities seminar on topics related to social justice. We are partnered with the Department of Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Our seminar takes place in a department classroom and is facilitated by university researchers. Experience what it’s like to be in a graduate school environment and to immerse yourself in critical race, feminist, and decolonial studies. You will read scholarly literature, engage in discourse with your peers in a supportive environment, and use your new theoretical framework and skills to analyze facets of our social world such as media, politics, and popular culture. In week 2 we will work with digital media experts. You will design your own digital artefact to express some of your critical reflections on and ideas about the seminar topics. The seminar concludes with a digital gallery exhibition and a visit from a professor in the Department of Social Justice Education to view, provide input on, and lead a discussion about the digital artefacts. In this seminar you will sharpen your reading, analysis, and discussion skills and become familiar with theoretical concepts that both enhance humanities and social science coursework and strengthen your ability to think critically and creatively about your everyday experiences. Come be a part of a rigorous, energizing, collaborative, and fun academic community!
This is a senior level program and a non-credit seminar. No previous background in critical race, feminist, decolonial studies or digital media is necessary.
