We use our brains to think, but how often do we think about the brain? This summer day camp allows young brainiacs to learn about how their brain works and how they can use the principles of neuroscience to improve brain health, focus and take joy in their learning on the way to high school. The camp uses hands-on activities, field trips and art to introduce neuroscience and its applications to the real world to students.

This summer day camp develops more advanced neuroscience training for high school students in preparation for university. The focus is on independent lab design and experimentation to help students mature as experimenters both in data gathering and analysis. This camp simulates the environment of a research lab to help students develop a deeper understanding of how neuroscience research develops new knowledge in our world.

Scholarships & Financial Assistance

Firefly Foundation provides scholarships to students from communities that are under-represented in science (e.g., low socio-economic background, radicalized youth, indigenous youth) to provide them with an enriched learning opportunity as well as opening doors to high education in the sciences. Eligibility for the full scholarship will be based on City of Toronto’s NIA profiles or community organizations serving youth.  Applicants for this award should know that their teacher, principal or counselor may be contacted to attest to their interest in neuroscience.

Students needing partial financial aid to help defray the costs of Bright Lights can apply for our financial aid program, which to provides students with a passion for learning about neuroscience, but are limited by financial resources to join the camp and experience an enriched learning opportunity as well as opening doors to higher education in the sciences. Eligibility for financial aid will be granted based on information provided on the application when you register.  Applicant’s teacher to confirm their interest in neuroscience.

Testimonials

I found the Bright Lights Summer Camp extremely engaging and educational. Beginning with the overall idea of the importance of taking care of what makes us ourselves and further going in depth with functions and properties of the brain. The program was even more enticing as I was provided with the financial support of attending with full scholarship by the Firefly Foundation.

If I hadn’t received this opportunity, I would have missed out on one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. It has allowed me to meet other students who are equally, if not, more interested in neuroscience and are proactive about finding reasons behind current challenges in the field.

It has also led me to become more interested in medical research as it often brings interesting results. I had the ability to perform research of my own interest with a team on the nematode C. elegans, where we tested their memory retention capabilities. The independence of the research and support from all the knowledgeable coordinators really brought the experience to a whole new level. I have to say, I really made excellent use of my summer break during the two weeks at this amazing camp!

The Bright Lights summer camp was unlike any other camp I have gone to. It was an amazing experience and I have learned a lot at this camp. If I could relive those two weeks then I would do it with more enthusiasm.

Bright lights has helped me academically because it has reinforced my passion to do this type of work till my last breath. It has taught me more than I would learn at school with the knowledge packed lessons.

It has helped meet new people from all over Toronto and become friends with students who have the same passion as I.

The Bright Lights summer camp has definitely solidified my decision to pursue a career in science. This camp allowed me to experience what real researching and working in a lab is like.

I am also very thankful for the scholarship as it gave me and many others the opportunity to experience this unforgettable camp.

This summer day camp introduces basic neuroscience training to students early in high school. The focus is on developing good lab technique, learning to work independently with lab equipment and allowing them to design their own experiments. The goal of this camp is to develop critical thinking and design skills to understand how science is truly practiced in the world. This camp introduces hands-on and lab-based activities to help students develop an appreciation for how research occurs in neuroscience labs.
